A brain aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge on the wall of an artery of the brain. As it enlarges, its wall thins; if it ruptures, it causes subarachnoid hemorrhage — a life-threatening bleed announced by a sudden, devastating headache. Securing the aneurysm quickly prevents a re-bleed, which is often fatal.
Dr. Nilesh Jain was trained in aneurysm surgery at Sree Chitra Institute, Trivandrum, and performs microsurgical clipping of ruptured and unruptured aneurysms in Indore — placing a tiny titanium clip across the neck of the aneurysm to exclude it permanently from circulation.
Warning signs of a brain aneurysm
- Sudden, extremely severe headache — 'the worst headache of my life'
- Headache with neck stiffness, vomiting or sensitivity to light
- Brief loss of consciousness
- Drooping eyelid or double vision (an enlarging aneurysm pressing on a nerve)
- Seizure following a sudden headache
- Unruptured aneurysms are often silent — found on scans done for other reasons
Treatment of brain aneurysms
A ruptured aneurysm is an emergency: after CT and angiography confirm the diagnosis, the aneurysm is secured early — by microsurgical clipping or, in suitable cases, endovascular coiling — to prevent re-bleeding. Clipping places a permanent titanium clip across the aneurysm neck under the operating microscope, preserving the parent artery.
Unruptured aneurysms found incidentally are assessed for rupture risk based on size, shape, location and patient factors; treatment is offered when the lifetime rupture risk outweighs the procedural risk. After treatment, patients need blood pressure control and periodic imaging follow-up.
