A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells inside the brain or its coverings. It may be non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant), and it can either begin in the brain itself or spread there from cancer elsewhere in the body. Because the skull is a closed box, even a benign tumour can press on vital structures and cause serious symptoms.
Dr. Nilesh Jain has been performing complex brain tumour surgeries in Indore since 2010, including microsurgical excision of gliomas, meningiomas, craniopharyngiomas, CP-angle tumours such as vestibular schwannoma, and trans-nasal endoscopic removal of pituitary tumours. Surgical planning is individualised for every patient using modern imaging, the operating microscope and neuro-endoscopy.
Common symptoms of a brain tumour
- Persistent or progressively worsening headache, often worse in the early morning
- Repeated vomiting without an obvious cause
- New-onset seizures (fits) in an adult
- Blurred or double vision, or progressive loss of vision
- Weakness or numbness of one side of the body
- Difficulty in speech, memory, or change in behaviour
- Imbalance while walking, giddiness, or hearing loss in one ear
How brain tumours are treated
Treatment depends on the tumour's type, size and location. Many tumours are best treated with microsurgical excision through a craniotomy, using the operating microscope to safely separate the tumour from normal brain. Tumours near the skull base or inside the ventricles may be approached endoscopically through a keyhole or through the nose (trans-nasal endoscopic surgery for pituitary tumours).
After surgery, the tumour tissue is examined by a pathologist. Depending on the report, some patients also need radiotherapy or chemotherapy, which is coordinated with oncology specialists. Benign tumours that are completely removed often need no further treatment, only periodic follow-up scans.
