Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumour of childhood. It arises in the cerebellum (the back part of the brain that controls balance) and tends to block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, causing raised pressure inside the head.
Treatment of medulloblastoma is a team effort that begins with surgery. Dr. Nilesh Jain performs microsurgical excision of posterior fossa tumours, aiming for maximal safe removal, followed by coordinated radiotherapy and chemotherapy with paediatric oncology specialists.
Symptoms of medulloblastoma
- Early-morning headache and repeated vomiting in a child
- Unsteady walking, frequent falls or clumsiness
- Head tilt or squint / double vision
- Increasing head size in infants
- Lethargy and decline in school performance
Treatment of medulloblastoma
The first step is surgery to remove as much tumour as safely possible and restore the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Some children need a temporary or permanent procedure for hydrocephalus, such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy.
After surgery, treatment is completed with radiotherapy to the brain and spine (in age-appropriate children) and chemotherapy. With modern multimodality treatment, a large proportion of children achieve long-term survival.
