Cranioplasty is the operation that repairs a defect in the skull — most commonly after a decompressive craniectomy, where a portion of skull bone was removed to save a life following severe head injury or stroke. Restoring the skull protects the brain, improves appearance and often improves neurological function.
Dr. Nilesh Jain performs cranioplasty in Indore using the patient's preserved bone flap or custom-shaped implants (titanium mesh, PEEK or bone cement), individually selected for each patient.
सिर के ऑपरेशन में निकाली गई हड्डी की जगह को बंद करने का ऑपरेशन cranioplasty कहलाता है। इससे दिमाग की सुरक्षा होती है और सिर का आकार सामान्य हो जाता है।
Why cranioplasty matters
- Protection — the brain under a skull defect is vulnerable to even minor trauma
- 'Syndrome of the trephined' — headache, dizziness and cognitive slowing that improve after repair
- Restoration of normal head contour and appearance
- Improved cerebral blood flow dynamics after the defect is closed
- Confidence to return to social life and work
How cranioplasty is performed
If the patient's own bone flap was preserved, it is replaced and fixed with miniplates. When the bone is unavailable or infected, a custom implant of titanium mesh, PEEK or bone cement is contoured to match the skull precisely — modern 3D-designed implants give excellent cosmetic results.
The operation is typically done 8–12 weeks after the original surgery, once the brain is relaxed and any infection has fully resolved. Most patients go home within 3–4 days.
